PEARL ACADEMY — BEGINNER

How to Care for Your Pearls

A pearl is one of the few gems that is alive in its own quiet way — soft, organic, and responsive to everything it touches. A little care, given consistently, is what lets its glow outlast us.

Pearls ask for very little — no polishing, no chemicals, no special tools. Only a few habits, kept gently and often.

01 — THE GOLDEN RULE

Last On, First Off

Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, and even the natural oils and acids in perspiration can quietly dull a pearl's lustre over time. Make your pearls the last thing you put on when you dress, and the first thing you take off when you come home.

A simple habit — wait at least 30 minutes after applying skincare, fragrance, or hairspray before putting your pearls on. Take them off before bed.

02 — EVERYDAY CARE

After Every Wear

  • Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove any residue before storing.

  • Store pearls separately from rings, bracelets, and other hard jewellery, to prevent scratching.

  • Keep them in a soft pouch or a fabric-lined jewellery box.

  • Never store pearls in a sealed bag or airtight container — pearls are an organic gem that holds a small amount of moisture, and a sealed environment can leave them brittle and dull over time.

03 — STRAND CARE

For a Strand Worn Often

  • Have a well-worn strand restrung roughly once a year to prevent the thread from weakening.

  • Silk thread is traditional and ideal; nylon is also acceptable.

  • Ask for a knot between each pearl — if the thread ever breaks, your pearls stay in place rather than scattering, and the knots keep the pearls from rubbing against one another.

  • Skin oils will gradually darken the thread over time. When this happens, restringing with fresh thread is simpler and gentler than trying to clean the old one — cleaning can loosen the knots, and some soaps are abrasive to the nacre.

"Every pearl we carry has already been chosen.

Twice — once by the ocean, once by us."
