What Makes a Pearl Valuable?
A pearl does not announce its worth. It is read — in the way light moves across its surface, and in the years spent growing quietly, unseen. Here is what we look for, every time.
Five qualities separate an ordinary pearl from an exceptional one —lustre, shape, surface, size, and nacre. None can be rushed. Each is written into the pearl long before it ever reaches our hands.
01 — LUSTRE
The Soul of the Pearl
Hold a fine pearl up like a mirror, and it will show you something back — a sharp, unmistakable reflection. This is lustre, and of the five qualities, it matters most. Light travels through the pearl's layers and returns transformed, carrying a glow no other gem can imitate. The clearer the reflection, the finer the pearl.
How we test it — we hold the pearl close and look for our own reflection. A crisp outline means exceptional lustre; the softer the edges, the further the pearl sits from its finest form.
02 — SHAPE
Roundness, and the Beauty Just Beside It
A perfectly round pearl is rare, and rarity has its price. But just beside perfect lies near-round — a pearl whose deviation is so slight it disappears at arm's length, while its price stays far kinder. We hold both in equal regard.
03 — SURFACE
The Marks of a Life Well Grown
No pearl grows without incident. Every mark on its surface is a record of the years it spent forming, quietly, inside a living creature. We look for a surface as clean as nature allows — but we do not chase an impossible flawlessness.
Perfection in a pearl is rare. That is what makes it worth finding.
04 — SIZE
Every Millimetre, a Year Survived
Size is patience made visible. A larger pearl asks its host to survive longer, and weather more, along the way — which is why, quality held equal, size and value tend to rise together. It is not the only measure of worth. But it is never a small one.
05 — NACRE
What Lies Beneath the Glow
Beneath every pearl's surface sit thousands of microscopic layers, laid one upon another like silk. A thicker nacre often means a longer life and a deeper heirloom value — but thickness alone does not create brilliance. It is how finely, how evenly those layers settle that gives a pearl its truest glow.
